I don't know what death is

     "Me pregunto
si un recuerdo es algo que conservamos
o algo que hemos perdido."
-Benjamin Prado

I don’t know what death is
but I know the dead carry with them
the memories of two or three faces
that made them madly damned
during their lifetime.
The dictionary notes that
a corpse
is the dead body
of a being
that has been alive.
Only a few, then,
may be counted
among the corpses.
I know death is not the ultimate frontier
it is love
and walking away I see a cadaver
alike love
worms writhing into
its empty eye-sockets:
like rotten loves.
And I wonder
are memories something we preserve
or something we have lost?
